Congratulations to Shaundrick Williams and Avoree Oliver for receiving the Tyler Rotary Young Citizen’s Award.
To love something so much that you want to teach it to others is why I became a teacher. I am Rikkita Devers-Watson. I am the 5th child of six children; five girls and one boy. I was born and raised in a close knit family in Marshall, Texas. I graduated from Marshall High School where I played basketball, volleyball, I was an officer in the student council, and I participated in the choir. I received a full academic scholarship to Wiley College where I graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration. While in college, I became part of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. After graduating from Wiley, I received an internship from Southside Bank to learn about banking. After my internship, I was offered a job as a retail banker with Woodforest National Bank. I witnessed a lot of adults having difficulties with balancing their accounts and understanding budgeting. After helping people in these areas, the mathematical aspects were becoming a passion for me and that’s when I decided to get certified as a teacher.
I really enjoy helping middle school aged students because they are beginning to find out who they truly are. I want to assure that the talents I have been blessed with will be used to teach others and allow them to reach the goals they have set for themselves.
I started tutoring students in the AVID program at A.T. Stewart Middle School and that’s when my love for teaching started to really blossom. I knew that I wanted to teach and that I wanted to teach math. Receiving my first teaching assignment in Tyler Independent School District at A.T. Stewart Middle School has been one of my most exciting accomplishments
